Legality of a web-client for a third party website?

I don't know how legal what you propose to do is - that's a question for a lawyer, but the couple of problems you describe - checking email and looking at a timetable would not be resolved with an easy simple GUI. You would still experience it. Those issues need to be resolved by the admin and current web developer.
