Was there an injustice with Medusa?

Some tell of Medusa's being d, but punishing her after a doesn't ring quite right. However, in another version her punishment makes more sense. Medusa is the mortal Gorgon sister of great beauty who prides her flowing tresses. She makes claims of being more beautiful than Athena. Neptune became enamored of her, and obtained her favors in the temple of Athena. Obtained...not taken. For violating the sanctity of the temple she receives her punishment.
