What are some ways to approach the collection plate during a recession?

With the way the economy is today, it is becoming increasingly harder to donate to the churches collection plate. Donating 10% of income was difficult before the recession, now its is impossible. Many worshipers have little to nothing to donate. What are some alternatives to donating to church and what are some tactics to avoiding the collection plate?
