What factors can contribute to a low percent yield?

We were preparing benzoic acid (soluble in hot water, low solubility in cold water) in the lab. We recrystallized the crude benzoic acid from boiling water. Could a reason why a low percent yield resulted be because too much hot water was added? Why?
